Can you dim the light from fluorescent tubes?
Dimming fluorescent tubes
Whether fluorescent tubes can be dimmed is a difficult question. It is possible to dim fluorescent tubes, but we would never recommend it. It is not wise for your wallet or time use and the result often does not meet expectations. Most fluorescent tubes cannot be dimmed properly. Flicker often occurs when a fluorescent tube is really dimmed, creating an unpleasant atmosphere. It is therefore not applicable as a usable light system. In some cases, it is possible to produce a properly dimmed light, but these systems are not reliable and they fail quickly. To dim a fluorescent tube you must have a number of requirements. To begin with, some knowledge of electrical installations is required. You also need a dimmable ballast, a three-core ground cable, and the right dimmer button. Most dimming buttons are made for dimming incandescent or
LED lighting, making them difficult to use for dimming fluorescent tubes. Even with the right parts, we cannot guarantee you usable dim light. That is why we advise against dimming a fluorescent tube, even with extensive technical knowledge. Instead of dimming a fluorescent tube, we recommend something else.
Dimmable LED tubes
The only way to install light tubes that reliably dim is by using
LED tubes. You can replace your current fluorescent tube 1-on-1 with dimmable LED tubes, you do not need to purchase new fixtures or adjust anything in your current fixture. There are LED tubes for luminaires with a conventional ballast, which use an LED starter. All you have to do is replace your current fluorescent tubes with LED tubes. This is the only way to save a lot of energy and therefore money. When you connect an LED tube to an LED dimmer, you can dim these tubes well.
